Vieira Da Silva / Penalba. The Path to Consecration

14 October - 21 December 2024

A&R Fleury gallery presents “Vieira da Silva / Penalba. The Path to Consecration”. Dedicated to their rise on the international stage, the project will highlight the 1950s production of these two major abstract artists, whose research significantly contributed to the development of art history in their time.

Curated by Victoria Giraudo, Senior Curator and Researcher specialised in Modern and Contemporary Latin American women artists, the presentation will bring together a group of emblematic, rigorously selected works, to reveal the connections between Vieira da Silva and Penalba, from their arrival in post-war Paris to their recognition as women artists in the public institutions of the time.

This dialogue is not merely contextual: their artistic approaches display remarkable visual, aesthetic, and thematic similarities. However, these resonances and the abstract architectures of their works reflect much more. Penalba’s stance as a sculptor challenged the expected role of women in her era, while Vieira da Silva asserted herself through a form of painting that defied categorisation. Their works appear intrinsically linked, naturally engaging in a dialogue: they have the particularity of being self-referential, constructed from personal memories of their respective pasts—Argentinian landscapes for one, and the streets of Lisbon or Paris for the other. Powerful, radical, and poetic, their works led to a redefinition of abstract art and left a deep, lasting impact on art history.

Neither figurative nor entirely abstract, the correspondences are manifold: in Vieira da Silva and Penalba’s artworks, they appear in the shapes and structures. But they extend even beyond, to the shared, profound, and absolute commitment of both women to their artistic practice.
