The Musée de l’Orangerie presents “Out of focus, another vision of art from 1945 to the present day”. Starting from Monet’s Nymphéas, the exhibition explores the concept of blurriness, its development throughout the history of art, and offers it as a key to open to another interpretation of a whole area of modern and contemporary visual creation.
Initially defined as “loss of distinctness”, blurriness has shown itself to be the favourite mean of expression in a world where instability reigns and visibility is clouded. It was on the ruins left by the Second Word War that this out-of-focus aesthetic took root and began to deploy its inevitable political dimension.

With a rich collection of modern and contemporary art in which abstraction plays a central role, the Musée d’arts de Nantes and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (United States) are presenting a major new exhibition exploring the historical, theoretical, and formal connections between optical art and video and digital art, from the 1960s to the present day.
In the 1960s, Op art spread widely across the visual arts and popular culture, championed by artists such as Victor Vasarely, Yaacov Agam, and Jesús Rafael Soto. Placing the viewer’s experience at the heart of their approach, Op artists used optical effects to challenge and disrupt visual perception.

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva: Anatomy of Space

In the spring of 2025, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents “Maria Helena Vieira da Silva: Anatomy of Space”. Featuring approximately 70 works, the exhibition offers an exploration of the visual language of the Portuguese-born artist, who was later naturalised as a French citizen.
Through Vieira da Silva’s references to Portuguese decorative traditions, as well as Cubism and Futurism, the exhibition examines the connections in her painting between abstraction and figuration within real or imaginary spaces.
After Venice, the exhibition will travel to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in the fall of 2025.

In 2025, the Monnaie de Paris partners with the Centre Pompidou to present a retrospective of the artist Georges Mathieu, the inventor of lyrical abstraction and a prolific artist.
Both chronological and thematic, the exhibition traces Georges Mathieu’s career from the 1940s—when he contributed to the creation of an international abstract expressionism—through to the 1990s, with a strong emphasis on the Mathieu collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne.

In tribute to the generosity of Alice Pauli, the exhibition celebrates the extraordinary journey of a pioneer. The creations of major figures in contemporary art—among them Louise Nevelson, Giuseppe Penone, Pierre Soulages, and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva—resonate with encounters made during the Salon international de galeries-pilotes. Pauli’s connections to the Swiss artistic scene are reflected in the presentation of works by Louis Soutter, Jean Lecoultre, and Juan Martínez. Following the exhibition dedicated to Chana Orloff, the Musée Zadkine continues to explore the artistic links forged by Zadkine throughout his life. This exhibition is the first to focus on an artistic friendship that has never been explored before: that between the sculptor Ossip Zadkine and the painter Amedeo Modigliani.
Through almost 90 works—paintings, drawings, sculptures, as well as period documents and photographs—we follow the paths taken by Modigliani and Zadkine, in the turbulent and fertile context of Montparnasse from 1910 to 1920. Benefiting from exceptional loans from major institutions—the Centre Pompidou, the Musée de l’Orangerie, and the museums of Milan, Rouen and Dijon—as well as from private collectors, the exhibition brings together, as in their early days, two major artists of the avant-garde, and enables us to renew the threads of an interrupted friendship.

From 11 October 2024 to 26 January 2025, Hessen Kassel Heritage will be paying homage to women artists and Informalism from the 1950s/60s with “InformELLEs”, a special exhibition at the New Gallery.
Between the early 1950s and the early 1960s, art informel, or informalism, became the dominant art movement in Europe. Completely beyond the classic principles of form and design, the works focused on the open creation process. At first glance, this abstract movement appears to be dominated primarily by art produced by male artists. However, this exhibition now examines art informel from a new perspective, and pays homage to sixteen of its leading female proponents, including Maria Lassnig, Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff, Judit Reigl, Mary Bauermeister, Marie-Louise von Rogister and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva. It will not only feature works by these well-known names, but also by rediscovered other long forgotten female artists. On the basis of questions about networks, exhibition participations and reception from a sociology of art perspective, it will also explore the mechanisms of the art business.
The exhibition is a collaborative project organised by Hessen Kassel Heritage, Kunsthalle Schweinfurt and the Emil Schumacher Museum in Hagen in cooperation with the Research Centre of Art Informel at the Art History Institute of the University of Bonn.

An Italian art historian once said that there were three essential twentieth-century artists in his country—the founding fathers, as it were: Amedeo Modigliani, Giorgio de Chirico and Lucio Fontana.
The exhibition “Lucio Fontana. Un Futuro c’è stato” was born out of a conversation with Pierre Soulages in 2020, during which these very different artists were compared, but linked by their relationship with time and space. Alongside Joan Miró, Fernand Léger and Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana was an artist—more a sculptor than a painter, no doubt—whom Soulages hoped would one day be exhibited in his museum.
This event stands as the first major exhibition on Fontana since his retrospectives at the Musée national d’art moderne Centre Pompidou in 1987 and the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2014. This one in Rodez is in keeping with the museum’s mission of presenting the great names of modern art, and offers a journey through Fontana’s entire œuvre, before and after the War, in Argentina and Italy, an evocation of his creative variety: paintings, papers, sculptures, ceramics and light, and space installations.

The Tessé Museum is presenting the exhibition “The Choice of Painting, Another History of Abstraction, 1962-1989” from February 10th to June 9th, 2024. It offers a panorama of three decades of abstract painting in France, from the 1960s to the 1980s.
How did artists kept on painting when the trend, starting from the 1960s, gazed towards pop art, non-art, conceptual art, or minimalism? Through about sixty works, the exhibition explores this interrogation by reflecting the diversity of new pictorial approaches based on a different conception of gesture, the role of colour, and the notion of painting.

Americans in Paris | Artists Working in Postwar France, 1946–1962

Following World War II, hundreds of artists from the United States flocked to the City of Light, which for centuries had been heralded as an artistic mecca and international cultural capital. “Americans in Paris” explores a vibrant community of expatriates who lived in France for a year or more during the period from 1946 to 1962.
While the U.S. art scene was dominated by the rise of Abstract Expressionism, Americans working in Paris experimented with a range of formal strategies and various approaches to both abstraction and figuration.
Showcased here are some 130 paintings, sculptures, photographs, films, textiles, and works on paper by nearly 70 artists, providing a fresh perspective on a creative ferment too often overshadowed by the contemporaneous ascendency of the New York art scene.

The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium are celebrating the hundred years of André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto with an extensive thematic exhibition. Designed in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou, it offers an expanded interpretation of surrealism. Encounter with some of the flagship works of this poetic immersion, from Giorgio de Chirico to Judit Reigl.
Born in Hungary in the early 1920s, Judit Reigl painted in relative isolation, on the fringes of major artistic movements of the post-war period, from surrealism to abstract expressionism, including action painting and lyrical abstraction. Among her early surrealist-inspired paintings executed on the banks of the Seine is Ils ont soif insatiable de l’infini, inspired by a poem by Lautréamont. A canvas she gifted to André Breton, who was captivated by this strange universe.

The Musée national Picasso-Paris presents its new temporary exhibition, “Léonce Rosenberg’s apartment. De Chirico, Ernst, Léger, Picabia…”. In the form of evocation of a vanished setting, the exhibition will bring to light a previously unpublished and little-known pictorial ensemble, by major artists of the inter-war period.
The exhibition tells the story of the legendary décor of the Paris flat of art dealer and gallery owner Léonce Rosenberg. He wanted to associate his name with late Cubism mixed with figuration, a path opened up by Picasso, an artist he admired and accompanied during the war and the 1920s.

FAB Paris, the art fair we’ve been waiting for

At last! That’s the sigh of relief many dealers are letting out. Now that the divisions between the Syndicat national des antiquaires (organizer of the Biennale) and Fine Arts Paris have been definitively overcome, Paris can look forward to the return of a strong generalist fair. Several indicators point to this dynamique. First of all, the name has been streamlined to focus on an acronym: FAB Paris, for Fine Arts la Biennale, instead of Fine Arts Paris & La Biennale. Secondly, the venue, the Grand Palais Éphémère – before the historic Grand Palais in 2024 – is clearly more appealing than the difficult Carrousel du Louvre [….].
Contemporary art also continues to make inroads, with the remarkable return of RX (with Pascal Convert and the troubling sculptures of Tamara Kostianovsky) and Christophe Gail- lard (Georges Noël), A&R Fleury (Bernar Venet).

From Soulages to Bernar Venet at A&R Fleury
Since the opening of FAB Paris on Tuesday, the galerie A&R Fleury has concluded several sales, including a work by Calder and another by Riopelle. Centered around the revival of painting in the 1960s-1970s, with Soulages’ blue-toned canvas as the centerpiece, and works priced between 90,000 and 2 million euros, the stand includes a focus on Bernar Venet, with not only sculptures but also a rare 1961 tar on paper.

For the first time, Le Carré d’Art in Nîmes, Viallat’s birthplace, presents an exhibition dedicated to this artist, founder of the Support/Surface movement. The exhibition focuses on recent works by Viallat, taken directly from the artist’s studio. Paintings, sculptures and assemblages are presented to demonstrate the talent of this exceptional colorist.
A founding member of the Supports/Surfaces group and historic figure of French abstract art, Viallat is tirelessly developing a body of work which is at once instantly recognisable and constantly on the move. In addition to his paintings, the exhibition will feature numerous objects, somewhere between sculpture and fortuitous assemblage that are always at once precariously balanced and consummately elegant. Their playful simplicity dialogues constantly with the intense formal and chromatic pleasures of his painting.
