Alicia Penalba | Le langage des formes

September 2021 - out of stock

Catalogue published for the exhibition “Alicia Penalba | Le langage des formes” (September 15th – October 30th, 2021)

Foreword by François Vitrani, Director General of the Maison de l’Amérique latine, Paris

Text by Victoria Giraudo, former Chief Curator of MALBA (Buenos Aires Museum of Latin American Art)

Alicia Penalba’s destiny and the strength of her work have always fascinated us. She arrived in Paris in 1948, asserting her personal universe with strength and determination, and devoted herself to the art of sculpture, which was then practiced almost exclusively by men. Alongside Germaine Richier and Barbara Hepworth, she became one of the few women sculptors of the 1950s who marked this period of artistic renewal.

We are pleased to present this exhibition revealing all the richness and sensitivity of her universe. This retrospective has come to fruition after many years of bringing together the most significant and rarest pieces on the market. We are pleased to present this event at the gallery and at the Maison de l’Amérique latine, which organised the first exhibition in France (1988) devoted to Penalba after her death.

This unique opportunity to bring together more than forty works in both spaces will be an important step in her rediscovery, enabling a repositioning of this immense artist in the context of the post-war avant-garde.
